Row, row, row your boat

Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream

It’s raining in Austin. The air smells fresh and in retrospect – the effort I put into curling my hair (twice) wasn’t worth it. Wet weather has always had a varying effect on me. Sometimes it rejuvenates me and I feel refreshed. Other times it leaves me feeling a little introspective and melancholy. Regardless – I always appreciate an excuse to wear my darling galoshes.

I’ve had the children’s nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat in my head lately. As I watched rain water rush by my feet this morning, I saw how beautifully and effortlessly it went with the flow.

Sometimes it’s hard to just focus on gently rowing our OWN boats. Down the stream WE picked. At the pace WE want. We’re too focused on what other people are doing, or thinking, or feeling. How do we measure up to them?

I think the bigger question should be – how do we measure up to ourselves?

When we’re happy with who we are…we can contently travel through life. I like the imagery of slowly rocking back and forth in a little canoe down a peaceful stream. Feeling the sunshine touch my skin. Taking in the sights and sounds of the nature around me. Knowing that life can be the dream we all want when we’re not afraid to let go of the things that are preventing us from creating it.
